Organ transplants: Hundreds helped by former cancer patients

Hundreds of people in the UK have received an organ transplant from someone with a history of cancer, despite many believing you cannot donate if you have had the disease.

Data obtained by the Press Association revealed that 272 organ donors across the UK in the past five years had a history of cancer.

Their donations resulted in 675 people receiving a transplant.

Eye donation is one key area where such donors have been able to help.

The figures from NHS Blood and Transplant showed that 1,033 people who had suffered from some types of cancer went on to donate their eyes - but not other organs.

Officials say there is a "common misconception" that people cannot be organ donors if they have had cancer, but there are some circumstances where it is possible.

The Advisory Committee on the Safety of Blood, Tissues and Organs has said the "risks of cancer transmission must be balanced against the risks of dying without transplantation".

"Organs from deceased donors with some cancers may be safely used for transplantation."

The risk of donor-transmitted cancer in the UK is currently assessed as 0.06%.

Minimise the risks

Prof John Forsythe, associate medical director for organ donation and transplantation at NHS Blood and Transplant, said people should not let a health condition or previous illness stop them from registering as a donor.

"We are very keen that everyone, regardless of their health status, registers a decision to donate and tells their family they want to donate.

"We work hard to minimize the risks to recipients by carefully evaluating all potential organ and tissue donors."
Cornea transplants can restore sight in recipients

About 70 cornea donations a week are needed to meet the demand for sight-saving transplants.
But one in 10 people on the NHS Organ Donor Register do not want to donate their eyes.

Successful procedure

Aspiring midwife Alison Cooney died in 2010 aged 28, only six weeks after she was diagnosed with bowel and liver cancer.

Her mother, Ann Cooney, from Alkrington, Greater Manchester, agreed to the donation of her corneas, which helped save the sight of two people.

"Her major organs could not be donated, because of the aggressive nature of her illness, but her eyes could be used," she said.

"Apparently not many people donate their eyes, although it is one of the most successful procedures.

"Even though initially it was very difficult to accept what was about to happen, it wasn't about us, and we had to focus on something good being achieved from something bad."

US Presidential Transports Limo One And Mobile Arsenals - National Geographic Documentary ||

Here is an interesting documentary about Limo One and Mobile Arsenals. Watch it and get informed or reminded about US presidents' limos. Enjoy!

10 Things About OBAMA's LIMO

Think you know all about President Obama's limo? Just watch this video and see...

General Motors caught testing next U.S. president's limousine

Spies have been tailing the presidential limousine. Not President Obama’s, but the one being prepped for his successor.

Testing of the next generation “Beast” has accelerated in recent weeks at General Motors Proving Ground in Milford, Mich., according to the KGPPhotography shooters who’ve caught it on camera.

It’s technically a hush-hush project – GM has yet to acknowledge that it is even working on the vehicle – but the automaker has been awarded several government contracts totaling $15,800,765 that suggest it’s involved. A fleet of 12 will likely be built.

The camouflaged, but clearly Cadillac-branded, vehicle appears to follow the same formula as the current model, with a faux-sedan body perched on top of a medium-duty truck chassis that can handle its 15,000-pound armor and technology-laden weight. The tall and beefy truck tires are a sure giveaway on this point.
But while the shape of the passenger compartment looks similar to Obama’s, the new limo has a grille and headlight design that appear to be inspired by the latest Cadillac Escalade, and a set of small tailfins at the rear.

It’s possible that the vehicle is more of an update than an all-new design. General Motors stopped building the medium-duty truck that the “Beast” is reportedly based on in 2009, the same year Obama took the keys to the car and the White House.

As for when the new one will make its official debut, if history is any guide, Jan. 20, 2017 – Inauguration Day – is a good bet.

Councils want crackdown on illegal tattooists

Local councils have called for tougher sentences for illegal tattooists, who they warn are offering cheap prices for their services to children.

The Local Government Association (LGA) said the problem was increasing because tattoo equipment was becoming more widely available and cheaper to buy.

The LGA warned that unlicensed tattooists can take "dangerous shortcuts with health and safety".
They may work in unsterilised studios, using cheap equipment bought online.

The LGA has also urged online retailers to provide warnings to children about the dangers of using do-it-yourself tattoo kits, which can be bought for less than £25.

It is illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to be tattooed, unless it is performed for medical reasons by a qualified medical practitioner, or someone working under their direction.

Unlicensed tattooists, also known as scratchers, often work from home in kitchens or garden sheds and advertise their services on social media.

It is illegal to work as a tattooist without registering with the local council.

Checklist for anyone thinking of getting a tattoo

  • An establishment should be registered with the local council - if in doubt ask to see the registration certificate or check the council's online database
  • Check whether the person you're dealing with has undergone recognised training and qualifications
  • Ask to see examples of the person's work
  • Ensure that you have read and signed a consent and medical form
  • Make sure tattoos are done with new needles. If you don't see the needle removed from a sealed package, don't allow the tattoo to be done
  • Check that a proper tattoo ink is being used and that it is sterile at the start of your treatment
  • The tattoo artist should always wash their hands and put on a fresh pair of medical-type gloves before each new procedure
  • Ensure that you are given advice on the aftercare for your tattoo

LGA Board member Cllr Morris Bright said tattooists operating under the radar posed "a real danger" to people's health as they often have low hygiene standards which "could put your life at risk".

"They can use unsterilised equipment that seriously increases the risk of spreading diseases such as hepatitis or HIV and causing permanent, ugly scarring," he said.

"Unregulated tattooists are also associated with bad tattoos, which require expensive work to put right, and because they've been done illegally, you won't have normal customers' rights.

"We would also encourage anyone who has visited an unregistered tattooist to seek medical advice from their GP and report the parlour to their local authority."

Council environmental health teams are in charge of carrying out raids and prosecuting illegal tattooists.
Those who ignore the law can also be prosecuted under health and safety legislation, which can lead to a £20,000 fine or a jail sentence.

In September 2015, Wrexham County Borough Council prosecuted a man for illegally tattooing children in his home for "pocket money prices".

He was fined just over £600 for six offences and a court order was issued for the destruction of his tattooing equipment.

About 20% of British adults have had a tattoo, according to a You Gov survey in 2015.

21 Ways to Build a Stronger Spiritual Life

Because we live in a culture that increasingly leans toward commercialism, materialism, and secularism, it is not always easy to keep the soul nourished.

The challenge of these days, when times are not hospitable to spiritual growth, is how to nuture, feed, heal, restore, and renew the soul. Here are 21 practical suggestions for building a stronger spiritual life.

1. Be a river, not a swamp.
The Bible says: “Rivers of living water will flow from the heart of those who believe in me” (John 7:38, margin).* Remember, it is the mountain stream that carries fresh, life-giving water because it flows out. However, the swamp is stagnant and life-devouring. A swamp collects and retains water that comes its way. Don’t be the kind of person who seeks to accumulate much before allowing a little to flow through.

As Christians we are to let blessings flow through us and on to others. When we hoard and dam the blessings in our lives we are in danger of becoming spiritually stagnant, emotionally detached, and intellectually cynical. Resolve to break up the dam and let blessings flow like a river. The freshness is in the flow.

2. Identify blessings.
Too often we go through life oblivious to the good that comes flowing into our lives. Try this spiritual exercise for one week: At the end of the first day, identify a blessing that came to you from a family member. At the end of the second day, a blessing from a neighbor. Third day, from a friend. Fourth day, from a work colleague. Fifth day, from a stranger. Sixth day, from a child. On the seventh day, a blessing that came from an “enemy.”

3. Be like Moses-speak words of blessing.
One of the most beautiful and compassionate passages in the Bible contains these words of blessing pronounced by Moses:

May the Lord bless you and protect you.
May the Lord smile on you and be gracious to you.
May the Lord show you his favor and give you his peace
(Numbers 6:24-26).

Get creative with language, and speak words that will uplift, encourage, hearten, and bless other people. As you build them up, your own spirit will get stronger.

4. Nurture a shared prayer life.
Increase the amount of time you spend in prayer by sharing in prayer with others. Some ways to do this include:

Letting friends know you are always available for prayer.
Attending regularly held prayer groups.
Participating in a prayer chain.

5. Take a step of faith.
Spiritual growth means taking a leap of faith from time to time. Rather than trying to get everything in place before you start something important, why not follow God’s leading and allow the plan to evolve? This means taking a step of faith and trusting God to provide what may be needed for success.

6. Restore someone’s faith.
Today, make time to heal a wounded heart, to extend kindness to someone who really needs a friend, or to help gather up pieces of a broken dream. Today, do whatever you can to radiate God’s unconditional love.

7. Be a grateful person.
Start every day with a morning prayer of gratitude to God for the gift of a new day. Do this even if the day ahead appears ominous. Conclude every day with an evening prayer of gratitude to God for the gift of the preceding hours. Do this even if you’ve had a very tough day.

8. Share the journey.
Hook up with one other person who is seeking to grow spiritually. Agree to meet once a week for a period of time to study and reflect on spiritual matters. A friend of mine, who is a busy executive in Toronto, Ontario, met for six months with another man to do Bible study. “No matter how hectic our schedules, we always met each week during our lunch hour at a downtown church that kindly provided us with a room for our meeting. Those were good months when a lot of spiritual growth took place,” he says.

9. Serve.
Look for ways to serve the community, especially tasks that promise no reward, such as picking up litter on the streets. Read and reflect on the action of Jesus in John 13:1-5.

10. Cultivate a little solitude.
“Solitude makes us tougher toward ourselves and tenderer toward others; in both ways it improves our character,” noted philosopher Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche. Spend some time away from the crowd and the noise of life. Set aside a few minutes to be alone-just you and God. In quietness we turn our minds away from the problems of life and fix our thoughts on the mind of God.

11. Fast and pray.
Prayer linked with fasting was often done by people in the Bible. Ezra 8:23 reports: “So we fasted and earnestly prayed that our God would take care of us, and he heard our prayer.” The next time you are asked to pray urgently for someone in difficulty, consider combining your praying with some fasting.

12. Turn worries over to God.
This is a clear teaching of Scripture: “Give your burdens to the Lord, and he will take care of you” (Psalm 55:22). Do this each time a worry crops up.

13. Spread love wherever you go.
That is the advice of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, who advised: “Spread love everywhere you go: First of all in your own house. . . . Let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier. Be the living expression of God’s kindness; kindness in your face, kindness in your eyes, kindness in your smile, kindness in your warm greeting.”

14. Keep your priorities straight.
Know what is ultimately important and what is not. Consider the words of former President George Bush: “I am blessed with a close and wonderful family, and I want to spend the rest of my life letting them know how much I love them and appreciate them,” he said. “One of my most important accomplishments, one I am still working on, is to be a huge success in the grandfather business. I would like to be remembered for integrity, service, and family.”

15. Strive for excellence.
The Bible tells us: “Whatever you do, do well” (Ecclesiastes 9:10). Be the best that you can be at whatever station in life God has placed you.

16. Use it or lose it.
God has generously endowed each of us with unique gifts and talents. Make use of them or you will run the risk of losing them. “Use your gifts faithfully, and they shall be enlarged; practice what you know, and you shall attain to higher knowledge,” noted ninteenth-century poet Sir Edwin Arnold.

17. Meditate on Scripture.
The Bible is loaded with verses of comfort, encouragement, and wisdom. Make it a habit to read and study your Bible in a regular, disciplined way. Highlight verses that speak to you. Meditate on those words. Memorize some of the passages so you can recall them from memory at a future time.

18. Be reliable.
Do what you say you will do-whether it’s convenient or not. Follow through on all of your commitments, large and small. By your actions, show others you are a person who can be trusted and counted upon.

19. Ask God to make you a blessing today.
A great way to grow in wonder and amazement is by asking God to turn your life into a blessing. Do this each morning before resuming your daily activities. Offer a short, simple prayer like this one: “Dear God, on this day make my life a blessing to someone, somewhere.” Then pay close attention to every person you encounter during the day, as God will honor your prayer, sometimes in surprising ways.

20. Spend time in nature.
This was something done by the psalm writers, and they gleaned spiri-tual lessons from their time in nature. “The heavens tell of the glory of God. The skies display his marvelous craftsmanship” (Psalm 19:1). “When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers-the moon and the stars you have set in place-what are mortals that you should think of us, mere humans that you should care for us?” (Psalm 8:3,4). “Mountains rose and valleys sank to the levels you decreed. Then you set a firm boundary for the seas, so they would never again cover the earth” (Psalm 104:8, 9).

21. Exercise your power of choice.
No matter what happens to you, you always have the freedom to choose. You can select joy over despair. You can select love over hate. You can select forgiveness over revenge. You can select growth over stagnation. Remember that a crisis can evoke the best in us or the worst in us. The choice is ours!

16 Simple Ways to Improve Your Health Today

Forget the excuses.  Just for today, focus on the many ways you can improve your health.  This list is by no means complete but a starting point to get you making your physical, emotional, and spiritual health a priority in your busy life.  And, once you do these health upgrades today, do them again tomorrow.  Before you know it you’ll be living a healthy lifestyle…with virtually no effort.

1. Drink more water. Your body is 90 percent water and needs water for almost every function.  Many of the aches and pains, headaches, and other symptoms we experience would lessen if we just drank more water.

2. Go for a brisk walk. Your body was made to move. Your heart is a muscle that needs movement to function optimally. We know this but we often need a reminder to just do it.

3. Better yet, take your brisk walk in nature. Trees and other plants are regularly turning our carbon dioxide into rich oxygen we can breathe. Getting rich, oxygenated air help kill bacteria and viruses, improves breathing, and may even help prevent cancer.

4. Hug someone you love. When you hug someone you love (someone who actually wants to be hugged), your body releases feel-good hormones like oxytocin that ward off depression.

5. Eat 2 or 3 pieces or servings of fruit (count ½ cup of fruit like grapes, blueberries, cherries, etc. as a serving). Brilliantly-colored fruit is packed with disease-fighting phytonutrients like proanthocyanins that protect against brain diseases and quercetin which helps alleviate allergies and breathing problems.

6. Eat a large salad. I’m frequently told by someone who is making excuses for his/her bad diet that eating healthy is expensive. Nonsense. Some of the best superfoods are cheap and readily available in the form of salad greens. They are packed with vitamins, minerals, chlorophyll (gives plants their green color and boosts our blood health), enzymes (that improve digestion and increase energy), and many phytonutrients.

7. Meditate. Just taking some time out to clear your thoughts and unplugging from technology and people can help you feel more balanced and peaceful.

8. Deep breathe for at least 5 minutes, as often as you can. Research shows that deep breathing, even for minutes, can reduce stress hormone levels. That translates into less anxiety, better sleep, and less likelihood to pack on the pounds.

9. Snack between meals on healthy snacks like almonds, veggie crudite, hummus and whole grain pitas. Not only will you stabilize your moods, you’ll balance your weight thanks to regulated blood sugar levels.

10. Drink a freshly made juice—preferably with green veggies. Green juices are Mother Nature’s healing nectar. They are powerhouses of nutrients that help your body heal and energize you all at once.

11. Stop and smell the flowers, literally. Not only will slowing down make you feel great, you will be exposed to natural aromatherapy with relaxing, energizing, or therapeutic effects. The fact that you can smell the flowers means molecules of their essential oils are coming into contact with your sensory systems—one of the fastest ways to balance hormones.

12. Write down at least 10 things for which you are grateful.  Increasing amounts of research show that gratitude builds better health and happiness.

13. Eliminate at least one item from your life that contains toxic chemicals (all commercially-available dryer sheets, almost every type of commercial laundry soap sold in grocery stores, dish soap, “air fresheners,” etc.) For essential items, choose a natural option instead. (See: 10 Cancer-Causers to Remove from Your Home)

14. Do something nice for someone. Years ago my husband and I were out in a restaurant in Pemberton, BC, Canada. When we asked for the bill we learned that it had been paid by a gentleman with whom we’d had a lovely conversation shortly after arriving. It not only made our day, we still think back with fondness about this kind man and how it gave us more faith in the goodness of people. You don’t even have to know the person for whom you do something nice.

15. Dry skin brush. Dry skin brushing in small circles with a natural bristled brush, working from your extremities toward your heart boosts your blood circulation and the movement of lymph through your body to help eliminate toxic waste buildup in your tissues while boosting your energy.

16. Soak in a warm bath with Epsom salts. The magnesium in Epsom salts absorbs through your skin and helps relax your muscles and reduce pain levels while contributing to your heart health.

What will you do today to upgrade your health?
